No, it’s not all about you, Martha

The ancient parable of Martha and sister Mary reveals how the call of our daily lives blinds us to the presence of God, standing in the shadows, nearby. Martha is the ‘hostess with the mostest.’ She labors to prepare an elaborate meal for Jesus and his entourage. Sister Mary ignores society’s code of hospitality. Instead, Mary sits at the feet of Jesus attending to the Kingdom of God. In Martha’s appeal to Jesus, she reveals her blindness to the Living God: “tell Mary to help me, Jesus, help me, Jesus.” No, Martha, it is not all about you. It is about “Lord Jesus, how can I serve you?” Martha is our example to see beyond the pressures of daily life. To open our eyes to the presence of God, standing in the shadows, waiting for our invitation.
