Captives Are For Rescuing

The experience of being a person is often the experience of captivity--to devices, to circumstances, to emotions, even to the past itself. Strangely enough, understanding ourselves and others in this way produces compassion and solidarity rather than judgment. Yet those who are in captivity ultimately need more than awareness or sympathy. We need a mediator and a ransomer, which today's epistle tells us we have been given in Jesus Christ. The documentary The Rescue (2021) provides a stirring picture of what this looks like.
